Life as a stray is tough… grabbing food whenever you can see a scrap, being chased away as an unwanted visitor, being kicked and shouted at by humans, leaves deep scars. Hunting until your little legs ache to find food for your babies, who are also starving and crying. No energy to keep going as you haven’t had a meal in days and nor have your kittens. Finding shelter when the wind is howling, and sleeping without a bed or blanket, in a ditch or under a hedge. Never being able to relax as you have a family to feed and your tummy aches.
Then one day humans take pity on you and catch you in a trap and take you to a rescue. Your lovely kittens learn to trust straight away and soon find loving families…..and you, the mummy cat is left… on your own… yes with food and shelter… but no one to love you… and no one to care and take you home . Why?? Because you are so damaged from your awful start. You are too frightened to come to a human, or sit by them or even look at them. Your awful existence has shaped you and told you that humans will only hurt you or drive you away. So you sit at the rescue and wait….and when someone visits, as usual you hiss, and when a human speaks to you hide or look away. Why? Because you don’t yet know how to love. So everyone walks by your pen.
It’s hard because you could go and live a feral life, again. But being at the rescue a while has taught you that it will be okay in the end. One day you will learn to trust. Can’t be stroked, won’t sit on your lap, won’t play. What an ask for someone??? What will I as an owner get from it I hear you ask? The most wonderful experience of taming a cat that has never known love. Small steps when they first look at you, or miaow or purr or even eat in front of you. It takes months even years… but every cat I believe can be tamed however scared.
At Sally’s Cat Rescue we believe that every cat deserves HOPE and someone to love them.
